Scope of Work

Personal Branding Agencies Editorial Reviewed

Most disputes between buyers and practices are not about quality. They are about expectations that were never written down. A scope of work closes that gap by putting the promises into specific, checkable language. It may be a section of a proposal, of a statement of work or of a contract.

What a Clear Scope Includes

  • Objectives: what the work is meant to achieve, in plain terms.
  • Activities: what the practice will actually do.
  • Deliverables: each output, with quantities, formats and due dates.
  • Responsibilities: what the buyer must provide, such as interviews, approvals and access.
  • Approvals: who signs off, and how quickly.
  • Exclusions: what is not included, stated outright.
  • Changes: how extra requests are made, priced and approved.

Vague Versus Specific

A vague scope reads like this: "Ongoing social media support and thought leadership content." A specific one reads like this: "Eight posts a month on two platforms, drafted from a monthly interview and approved by the client before publishing, plus two bylined articles a quarter, pitched to an agreed list of outlets." The second version can be checked at the end of every month. The first can mean almost anything.

Scope of Work Versus Statement of Work

The two terms are often confused. A statement of work is a contract document. The scope of work is the description of the work itself, which sits inside a statement of work or a proposal. A statement of work also covers fees, payment terms and legal details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a scope of work?

The part of an agreement that says exactly what a practice will do, including activities, deliverables, quantities, timeline, each side's responsibilities and what is excluded.

What should not be in a scope of work?

Promises of results the practice cannot control, such as guaranteed press placements or follower numbers. Outcomes belong in goals and measures, not in the list of deliverables.

What happens if I need something outside the scope?

A good agreement says how changes are requested, priced and approved. Without that, extra requests either go undone or turn into scope creep.

Who writes the scope of work?

Usually the practice, after a discovery conversation. Read it closely, and ask for anything unclear to be rewritten before you sign.
