Personal branding agency or marketing agency: the person or the product.

Both write content, build websites and run social accounts, so the line between them blurs. The difference is what each one is selling: you, or what you sell.

The Short Version

A personal branding agency works on a person. A review of more than a hundred studies by Gorbatov, Khapova and Lysova defined personal branding as a strategic process of creating, positioning and maintaining a positive impression of oneself, and set it apart from fame and plain self-promotion. In practice that means positioning, messaging, a website and profiles that agree with each other, content in your own voice, and care for your reputation over years.

A marketing agency works on an offer. Its core skill is reaching customers and moving them toward a purchase: campaigns, paid advertising, search, email, landing pages, content marketing and the analytics that tie them to leads and sales. Many are excellent at it, and for a company that needs demand, a marketing agency is often exactly the right hire.

What a Personal Branding Agency Does

The work starts with the person. What do you want to be known for, by whom, and what should you stop being known for? From the answers it builds a position and a message, then the places people meet you: your website, your profiles, your talks, your articles, your interviews. Good practices also prepare you for the human side of visibility. Fournier and Eckhardt, following one public figure over two decades, describe a person-brand as two bodies, the person and the brand, and show that the person's mortality, pride, unpredictability and relationships can either strain the brand or give it intimacy and authenticity, depending on how they are handled. A product never has that problem.

What a Marketing Agency Does

A marketing agency starts with the customer. Who buys, what do they need to hear, and through which channels can they be reached at a cost that makes sense? Its output is built to persuade, and it is measured by whether it does. That focus is a strength when the job is selling an offer. It is a limit when the job is building a person, because audiences read advertising as advertising. Friestad and Wright's persuasion knowledge model describes how people learn the goals and tactics of persuaders and use that knowledge to cope with them. A person who sounds like a campaign gets read like one.

Where They Overlap

The overlap is real. Both produce content, both build websites, both can run social accounts, and both care about search. Some marketing agencies now call themselves personal branding agencies because the term is in demand, and some personal branding practices run paid promotion for clients. The label matters less than the work behind it, so ask what share of the practice's clients are individuals, and ask to see work done for a person rather than a product.

When to Hire Which

  • Hire a personal branding agency when the asset is you: your expertise, your judgment, your name.
  • Hire a personal branding agency when you are changing roles, launching something under your own name, or your presence no longer matches who you are.
  • Hire a marketing agency when the goal is demand for a defined offer and you can measure it in leads and sales.
  • Hire a marketing agency when your positioning is settled and the gap is reach, not clarity.
  • Hire neither yet if you cannot say in a sentence what you want the next year to change. Start with an audit or the Brief Builder.

How to Combine Them

Founders and executives often need both, and the two help each other. Love, Lim and Bednar found that highly regarded chief executives enhance their firms' reputations, sometimes substantially, while prominence alone was not linked to a better one. Being seen is not the same as being well regarded, and that difference is the personal branding agency's territory. The marketing agency then sells the company's offer to customers who may already trust the person behind it.

To make the pairing work, agree on three things in writing. Who owns which accounts, and whether a personal profile can ever be used for company promotion. Whose message comes first when the two disagree. How the agencies share calendars, so a product launch and a personal announcement do not collide. Every PBA listing names the clients a practice is ideal for, such as executives or entrepreneurs, and the directory can be filtered by it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a personal branding agency or a marketing agency?

If the brand people buy into is you, a personal branding agency. If they buy a product or service that could be sold without your name on it, a marketing agency. Many founders need both, with the personal work first and the company campaigns built on it.

Can a marketing agency build my personal brand?

Some can, especially those with a team that works with individuals. Ask how many of their current clients are people rather than companies, how they learn a client's voice, and to see an example. Campaign skills do not automatically transfer to building a person.

Is personal branding the same as marketing?

No. Marketing promotes an offer to customers. Personal branding shapes how a person is known, over a longer period, in their own voice. The two use some of the same tools, which is why they are easy to confuse.

Should a founder hire a personal branding agency or a marketing agency first?

It depends on the gap. If customers do not yet know what the company sells, the marketing work is urgent. If investors, partners or hires need to trust the founder, the personal work comes first. When in doubt, start with a short fixed project and decide after.
