PBA Wiki · For Buyers
Who to hire for your personal brand: six options compared.
Six kinds of professional can help with a personal brand, and each is built for a different job. Start with the gap you need to close, then pick the help built to close it.
The Short Version
Buyers looking for help with a personal brand usually meet six kinds of professional. All six are legitimate, and each is often the right hire. They differ in what they are built to do. Gorbatov, Khapova and Lysova, reviewing more than a hundred studies, define personal branding as a strategic process of creating, positioning and maintaining a positive impression of oneself. Only one of the six is built around that whole process; the other five each do one part of it very well.
The Six Options at a Glance
| Option | Focus | Typical deliverables | Best when | Not built for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal branding agency | Your positioning and presence as a whole | Positioning, message, bio, website, profiles, content, media preparation | You are unsure what to be known for, or your presence no longer fits | Selling a product at scale, or a single narrow task |
| PR firm or publicist | Earned media coverage | Pitches, media lists, interview preparation, coverage | You have a clear story with a news angle | Deciding what your story should be |
| Marketing agency | A company's products or services | Campaigns, ads, search, email, landing pages, reporting | The goal is demand for a defined offer | Building how a person is known |
| Social media manager | Your social accounts, week to week | Calendar, posts, graphics, video edits, replies, reports | The message is clear and you lack the time to post | Setting your positioning or presence beyond social media |
| Ghostwriter | The words published in your name | Books, articles, speeches, newsletters, posts | You know what to say and need it written well | Deciding what to say or where to say it |
| Brand coach | Your own skill and clarity | Sessions, exercises, feedback, an action plan | You have time and want to do the work yourself | Producing the work for you |
What Each One Does
Personal Branding Agency
An agency decides what you want to be known for, by whom, and why, then shapes every place people meet you so they say the same thing. It can include writing, social media and media work, delivered Done For You, Done With You or as advice.
PR Firm or Publicist
A PR firm or publicist earns coverage by pitching journalists, editors, producers and podcast hosts. Coverage carries weight because someone else chose to run it: Eisend and Kuster's meta-analysis found that publicity has a credibility advantage over advertising. Read personal branding agency or PR firm.
Marketing Agency
A marketing agency brings customers to a company's offer through campaigns, advertising, search and email, measured in leads and sales. It is the right call when the brand people buy is a product rather than a person. Read personal branding agency or marketing agency.
Social Media Manager
A social media manager keeps your accounts active and consistent: planning, posting, editing and replying. Stephen and Galak, studying an online lending marketplace, found that social media mentions came far more often than press coverage and helped generate press, so steady social activity has value beyond the feed. Read personal branding agency or social media manager.
Ghostwriter
A ghostwriter turns your ideas into books, articles, speeches and posts in your voice. The ideas and the approval stay with you. Read personal branding agency or ghostwriter.
Brand Coach
A coach helps you find your direction and build the brand yourself, through regular sessions, feedback and accountability. It takes more of your time and leaves you with the skill. Read personal branding agency or brand coach.
How to Decide
Name the gap before you name the hire. Four questions narrow it quickly.
- Do I know what I want to be known for, and by whom?
- Is the brand people buy into me, or a product or service?
- Is my main gap clarity, coverage, demand, consistency, writing or skill?
- How many hours a week can I honestly give this, and do I want to learn to do it myself?
If the first answer is no, start with a personal branding agency or a brand coach, depending on your time. If you are clear on the message, hire the specialist for the gap: a publicist for coverage, a marketing agency for demand, a social media manager for consistency, a ghostwriter for words.
Combining Help
Most people who invest seriously in a personal brand end up using more than one of these, and the order matters. Positioning comes first, because every other professional works better from a clear brief. Execution follows: writing, social media, and the website. Press and paid promotion come last, because they send new attention to whatever already exists.
When two or more are involved, put three things in writing. Who owns the strategy when they disagree. Who holds the logins and owns the content. How anything is approved before it is published in your name. Ask whether the professionals have worked alongside each other before, and introduce them early.
Before You Hire Anyone
Doing it yourself is a real option, and many people try it first. Labrecque, Markos and Milne audited the online presence of a group of individuals and found that people do try to brand themselves, but their efforts are often misdirected or insufficient, particularly during life changes or when serving several audiences. If that sounds familiar, outside help may be worth it; if it does not, a lighter option such as coaching or a single audit may be enough.
