The Short Version

A social media manager runs your accounts. The work is steady and practical: a content calendar, posts written or adapted, images and short video edited, comments and messages answered, and a monthly look at what reached people. Many are freelancers; some work inside a company or as part of an agency. A good one is the reason a presence stays alive in a busy month.

A personal branding agency works one level up. It decides what you want to be known for, by whom, and why anyone should care, and then shapes every place people meet you: your website, your profiles, your talks, your interviews and your social accounts. Social media is one channel in that plan, often an important one, but not the whole of it.

What a Social Media Manager Does

Consistency is the core of the job, and it matters. Zajonc's classic experiments on mere exposure found that repeated exposure to something tends to make people feel more favorably toward it. A presence that shows up regularly gives people the repetition that familiarity is built on. Most people building a personal brand know what they should post; what they lack is the hours to do it every week. A social media manager supplies those hours, along with platform knowledge, editing skill and the patience to answer comments.

What a social media manager usually does not do is decide who you are. If you hand over accounts without a clear position, you will get competent posts about whatever is easiest to post about.

What a Personal Branding Agency Does

A personal branding agency works on what repetition repeats. Moulard, Garrity and Rice, in a survey of 428 adults, found that a public figure was seen as more authentic when they were both rare, meaning distinctive, and stable, meaning consistent over time. Consistency without distinctiveness is noise people learn to scroll past. The agency's job is the distinctive part: a point of view, a set of topics you own, and a voice people recognize as yours. It then makes sure the website, the bio, the talks and the social accounts all say the same thing.

Many personal branding agencies also run social accounts as part of a Done For You engagement, and some work alongside a manager the client already has. See engagement models explained for what each arrangement means.

Where They Overlap

Both write posts, both think about content, and both report on what is working. A senior social media manager may help with positioning; a personal branding agency may post on your behalf. The difference is which decision each is built to make. One decides the message; the other delivers it on schedule.

Social activity also reaches beyond social media. Stephen and Galak, studying an online lending marketplace, found that both press coverage and social media mentions were linked to more sales. Press had the larger effect per mention, social mentions came far more often, and social activity helped generate press. A steady social presence and a clear position work best together.

When to Hire Which

  • Hire a personal branding agency when you are not sure what to post about, or your profiles describe who you were rather than who you are.
  • Hire a personal branding agency when you need the website, bio, speaking and media pieces to agree with your social presence.
  • Hire a social media manager when your positioning is settled and the gap is time and rhythm.
  • Hire a social media manager when you already create material, such as talks, articles or recordings, and need it turned into regular posts.
  • Hire both when you need a plan and someone to carry it out every week.

How to Combine Them

The usual order is strategy first, then rhythm. A personal branding agency sets the position, the topics and the voice, often in a short written guide. The social media manager works from that guide every week and reports back what is landing, which feeds the next round of strategy.

Put three things in writing. Who owns and holds the logins to each account. Who approves posts, and how quickly. Whether anything may be published in your name without your sign off; the answer should be no. Every practice listed on PBA has signed the Code of Ethics, and the Brief Builder helps you describe which of these roles you need before your first call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a personal branding agency or a social media manager?

If you know what you want to be known for and lack the time to post, a social media manager. If you are unsure what to say, or your presence beyond social media is out of date, a personal branding agency. Many people need the agency first and the manager after.

Is a social media manager enough to build a personal brand?

Sometimes, if your positioning is already clear and social media is where your audience is. A social media manager keeps a presence consistent; it is rarely their job to decide what the presence should stand for.

Can a personal branding agency manage my social media?

Many can, usually as part of a Done For You engagement. Ask who writes the posts, who approves them, and whether the person doing the daily work is the same person who set the strategy.

Should a social media manager post as me?

Only with your approval and in your voice. Agree on an approval process, and decide whether replies to comments and messages come from you or from your team.
